Does Physical Activity Influence Academic Performance?

by Leslee J. Scheuer, Graduate Student and Dr. Debby Mitchell, Ed.D

Fantastic summary of current research about topic! Thanks for pulling these studies together.

I think there are too many variables in human behavior to ever "prove" that physical activity causes better academic performance. Even looking at twins reared apart would reveal differences in diet, parenting, education, etc. as well as opportunity for physical activities. The most significant research that can support physical education as a discipline in school are those that compare many equitable schools that do and do not offer daily physical education K - 12. If standardized test scores, graduation rates, advanced placement scores, etc. are the same then no argument can be made to cut physical education so more time can be devoted to academics.
The other important research is at the molecular level. Neurobiologists continue to confirm what we physical educators already feel intuitively-- vigorous activity stimulates you to think more clearly, solve problems with less anxiety and relax completely. They are discovering the underlying processes and mechanisms.
