Sports Ankle Brace

Participating in any sport brings with it the risk of becoming injured. Some injuries are severe enough that they don’t allow return to activity for an extended period of time.  Others are not as severe and require less healing time.  Many athletes learn to play with some pain, enabling them to return to playing their sport in a relatively short amount of time.  Often these injuries do need extra support and bracing to make up for the lack of stability the injury causes.

Every sport has injuries that the athletes are more prone to developing.  For example, volleyball and basketball athletes are prone to ankle, knee and shoulder injuries.  Soccer players are prone to ankle, foot and knee injuries.  Golfers and baseball players are prone to back and shoulder injuries.  Prevention of these common injuries is as important as treating injuries after they occur.

Whether an athlete is preventing injury or returning after injury, braces and other supports play an important role in protecting the body part that is at risk.  Many athletes chose to wear sport ankle braces while playing to prevent ankle rolls.  Ankle braces add stability to weak and injured ankles.  When an ankle is injured, the ligaments get damaged and stretched, causing the ankle to become unstable.  Wearing external braces helps to support the ankle and prevents it from rolling again.

Another way that athletes can play with an injury is to have the injured part taped with athletic tape.  When an athlete chooses to use tape instead of braces, he is able to get a customized level of support.  Some athletes like a little support while others prefer a more restrictive support.  Tape offers them the freedom to have the injury supported as much or as little as necessary.  Weaning off external support is easier with tape because the amount of support can be adjusted a little at a time until the support is no longer needed.

Before return to play can be considered, an injured athlete needs to give the injury time to heal.  Therapy can help to speed this process and strengthen the injured area.  Strengthening is necessary to return to play, but also is a great way to prevent future re-injury.

Many athletes are not used to playing with anything foreign on their bodies.  When they have to use support, such as sport ankle braces, they must become accustomed to playing with the brace.  The inconvenience of having to get used to playing with a brace is small in comparison to the benefits that come from having the extra support for the injured area.

While it is not always easy and pain-free, playing a sport with an injury is possible with the right support.  Sport braces help injured athletes return to play sooner than they could without them.
