Where Did the Boston Orioles Get Their Name?

You may or may not know anything about Baltimore, Maryland. Situated on the east coast of the United States, Baltimore lies within a short commute to our nation's capital Washington DC. It is home of Loyola college, the Ravens and the baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles play at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Maryland. They play in the Eastern Division of Major League baseball's American League. They have several interesting nicknames. One of which is the "O's". The other nickname is "the birds"; since it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that an "Oriole" is a type of bird.

The Baltimore Orioles started their baseball tradition way back in 1901 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Later, in 1902, they moved to Baltimore and renamed the team the Orioles. Why did they move across country to Baltimore? Maybe it was too cold in Wisconsin. Actually, these things happen due to economics not the weather.

TheOrioles have beenWorld Series victors three times. The Baltimore Orioles have won the 1966, 1970 and 1983 World Series. They also have numerous Eastern Division titles and American League Pennants under their belt. This is very commendable for a baseball team; especially a baseball team that plays in Baltimore.

Stars of the Baltimore Orioles include Earl Weaver, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson and Tommy Lasorda. If you were wondering who "Jackie Robinson" was in the baseball world, he was one of the gentlemen listed on the Orioles roster.

Interestingly, during the national anthem at Orioles games, fans love to over-emphasize the word "O". When singing the Star Spangled Banner in Baltimore, be sure to yell out the words "O" and pay tribute to the cities baseball franchise. You can also participate in their other unusual tradition: since 1975, they have played John Denver's "Thank God I'm a country boy" during a particularly rough seventh inning stretch. Go Orioles!
