The Cincinnati Bengals are an American football team that plays in the National Football League. The Bengals are based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Cincinnati Bengals play in the Northern Division of the AFC. The Bengals were created in 1968, shortly before the merger between the American Football League and the National Football League in 1970. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium, named for legendary coach Paul Brown who founded both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns. The Bengals were named after a former Bengals football team in Cincinnati. Interestingly, the uniforms of the Cincinnati Bengals were extremely similar to that of the Cleveland Browns, Paul Brown's former team. In fact, the shade of orange used for the Bengal's helmet is the exact same color as the browns, the only difference being the word "Bengals" written across it in capital letters. Today the helmet is marked with a few simple tiger stripes, which was the original concept for the helmets, but was shot down in the '60s. Part of the reason for the similarity with Cleveland is that Paul Brown still owned all the Brown's equipment when he was fired, so he packed it all up with him and modified it only slightly for the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengal's running back Ickey Woods is largely responsible for the NFL's current penalties against excessive celebration on field. Woods would preform a little dance after his plays that became a standard in football and other sports.
