The Cincinnati Reds have been a fixture in the professional baseball scene since their conversion from an amateur team in 1869. They first began as an amateur ball club called the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1863, way before they were called the Cincinnati Reds. The team name was changed to Cincinnati Reds in 1850, and then it became the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1953 before going back to being the Cincinnati Reds in 1958. These changes in the team's name do not remove the fact that the Reds are a significant part of baseball history.
This baseball team is one of the oldest in the professional leagues. The history behind the Cincinnati Reds shows just how the ball club has survived the numerous changes that they had to go through. They moved from one ballpark to another, changed names, had the original "Red Stockings" moved to Boston, and yet the team known as the Cincinnati Reds has survived and became one of the best teams in the Major League with a number of wins in the West and Central Divisions as well as in the American Association and National League competitions.
Part of the team's claim to history is its win in the inaugural pennant of the American Association in 1882. While the Cincinnati Reds do have a title under the association's banner and a historical one at that, their connection with the AA was short lived since they moved to the National League in 1889. This happened the year before they changed their name to the Cincinnati Reds from Cincinnati Red Stockings, and the move to the NL was done together with another well known baseball club, the Brooklyn Dodgers. They went on to win 9 pennants under the National League and claimed five World Series Championships between 1919 and 1990.
