The two more common forms of dog racing are the standard track based dog racing and sled dog racing, each form requires it’s on types of dog racing equipment. Dog track racing takes little to no equipment on the part of the dog breeder or dog owner. Sled dog racing takes quite a bit of equipment and preperation before setting out, as well as taking several dogs.

The dog racing equipment that is needed for dog track racing as stated before are slim, the first thing needed is of course the track which isn’t a concern of the dog’s owner, what the dogs owner needs to be concerned with is the dog’s harness and number as well as the dog’s muzzle if required. In dog track racing the dog’s are released and chase down another important piece of dog racing equipment that is needed and again lies on the shoulders of the track owner, the equipment being the rail guided rabbit that the dogs chase. Dog track racing is similar to horse racing in methods of betting, the rating system is of course different since the abilities of a rider are of no concern.

Sled dog racing takes a good amount of dog racing equipment and again as stated before it also requires multiple dogs and a good amount of preparation. Everything about these two forms of racing ranging from the dog racing equipment right down to the type of dog, track racing dogs tend to be greyhounds and sled dogs tend to be from the husky family, are completely and totally different. Getting back to the dog racing equipment needed for the sled dog races, different types sleds can be purchased, a basket style sled and a toboggan style sled. In a race the sled must have the proper dog racing equipment to be able to take a fatigued or injured dog and keep them warm and covered as well as be able to carry the supplies that are approved of and needed to survive. After the sled is covered the other major dog racing equipment that is needed is the harness that is used to tether the dogs to each other and to the sled.
