Behind the AT&T Controversy and Jeff Burton

The 40 year old driver of the #31 Chevy is Jeff Burton who was born on the 29th of June in 1967. Originally from South Boston in Virginia, Jeff Burton drives for the Richard Childress team and competes in the Nextel Cup and the NASCAR Busch Series. Jeff Burton has 27 wins and 136 top tens in the NASCAR Busch Series as well as 19 wins and 194 top tens under the Nextel Cup category.

Jeff Burton is now driving under the sponsorship of AT&T. However, this sponsorship seems to have come under fire with the recent logo disputes and such due to the acquisition of Cingular Wireless by AT&T. Since Cingular Wireless was the sponsor of the #31 Chevy of Jeff Burton before 2004, the year when Nextel was given the naming rights to the top division of NASCAR, arguments surfaced when AT&T came into the picture. Since Nextel and AT&T are rivals and AT&T had purchased the company that sponsored the vehicle Jeff Burton was driving under the management of the Richard Childress racing team, problems obviously arose.

AT&T wanted to place their logos and wanted their brand name to appear on the # 31 car of Jeff Burton, but NASCAR argued that their contract with Nextel would not allow such a thing. They pointed out that a clause on the contract with Nextel stated that Cingular Wireless cannot change any of the names or logos on the car for the duration of the Nextel contract. This problem saw the appearance and the disappearance of the AT&T logo from the car that Burton drove. This was due to the lawsuits and appeals that approved and disapproved of the move by AT&T to have their logo appear on the car driven by Burton.
