Sacramento Kings: From the Royals to the Kings

The Sacramento Kings is one of the oldest franchises in the history of the NBA and was in fact part of the now defunct NBL. This team called the Sacramento Kings is a professional basketball team that calls the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California its home and has the colors black, gold, purple and silver as the team's official colors. The Sacramento Kings is a basketball team that has been around since 1946 and has undergone a huge number of moves and name changes due to these moves.

The Sacramento Kings was actually born as the Rochester Royals. This basketball team played under the NBL or National Basketball League and was based in Rochester, New York. Even before the team became the Royals, it was called Seagrams and then Pros before the Royals name was used after it was selected for the team via a naming contest. The team now called the Sacramento Kings used the Royals name in Rochester and in Cincinnati where it moved in 1957. By this time, the team had become a part of the NBA and had already won its first NBA championship title while still under the Rochester name.

The Sacramento Kings was then moved to Kansas City and had to be renamed since the city already had a team named the Royals. The Kings name was then used for the team and the newly relocated team became the Kansas City-Omaha Kings due to the team's use of both cities as alternate homes. The Sacramento Kings then became simply the Kansas City Kings after they finally settled down in Kansas City in 1975. Ten years later, the Kansas City Kings move once again and this time the transfer is to the city of Sacramento in California. This final move has them changing their name again to reflect their new home and they are now called the Sacramento Kings and have been known as such since 1985.
