In 1849, millions of people flocked to California in search of gold. While some miners struck it rich, many did not. The rapid influx of people however created some of the biggest cities in the state of California including San Francisco. Today, there's a different sort of treasure on the West Coast: the San Francisco ‘49ers. Appropriately, named after the famous gold rush, this team is arguable one of the best NFL teams in the history of the sport.
The San Francisco ‘49ers started their football legacy in 1946 as an All-American Football Conference team. Later, they joined the Western Division of the NFL in 1950. Their team colors today are Cardinal red, gold and black. They have the most Super Bowl victories at 5; winning Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV and XXIX. When people talk about the ‘49ers, it's usually with a tone of reverence.
Some notable stars of the San Francisco ‘49ers include Bill Walsh, OJ Simpson (before the controversy), 3 time Super Bowl MVP Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young and of course Jerry Rice. These players have mastered the science and art of football. You won't have a team roster much better than they do in this city.
Sports fans argue that during the 1980's and 90's, the San Francisco ‘49ers were arguably the best team in football history. If you were around for any of those games back then, you'd understand. The shear excitement, teamwork and coaching isn't the kind of football most people ever get to see in their lifetime. This team has been an inspiration to football fans in California and throughout the nation as well.
If you live in San Francisco, you probably enjoy good weather most of the year, have a good sense of style, have ridden a trolley and are or at least know a ‘49ers fan. Wear that red jersey with pride because your team earned it!
