The Famous Names In the History of the Atlanta Hawks

The basketball team that is based in Atlanta and one of the well known teams of the National Basketball Association or NBA is called the Atlanta Hawks. The Atlanta Hawks is part of the Southeast Division of the NBA and is the result of a few moves from one city to another until they found their home in Atlanta in 1968. The Atlanta Hawks was born in 1948 as the Tri-Cities BlackHawks and first saw play in the tri-city area that is located between Iowa and Illinois. After a couple of moves that included Milwaukee and St. Louis as well as the shortening of the name into just "Hawks", the Atlanta Hawks finally stayed in Atlanta, Georgia.

The team has a few notable players that have contributed to the popularity of the team as well as to the numerous wins that they have had in the past. Playing out of the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta Hawks have a number of division titles and conference titles to their credit. The team has also won an NBA championship during their time in St. Louis. However, they still have to make such a winning statement in Atlanta.

Dominique Wilkins played from 1982 to 1994 as a small forward for the team. Moses Malone played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1988 to 1991 and held the position of center or power forward. Also included in the list of notable players in the team are Antoine Walker and one time slam dunk champion, the 5 foot 6 inch point guard, Anthony "Spud" Webb. Spud Webb won the slam dunk competition in 1986 and is reputedly the shortest player to ever compete in the event.
