Founded in the first part of the new millennium, the Charlotte Bobcats is a team that was created to take over the vacated spot of its more popular predecessor, the Charlotte Hornets. The Charlotte Bobcats basketball team was established after the Hornets were moved by its owner to New Orleans. The owners of the Charlotte Bobcats are business man Robert Johnson, musician and rap artist Cornell Haynes who is popularly known as simply "Nelly" and legendary basketball superstar, Michael Jordan.
The three people who share ownership of the Charlotte Bobcats are big names in their own rights with Johnson being known as the founder of Black Entertainment Television and one of the first African American team owners in the US and Nelly being a popular rap artist that has a huge number of solo hits and collaborations to his name. Michael Jordan holds the second largest share of the team and needs no further introductions since he single-handedly became one of the biggest basketball icons in the 90s.
The Charlotte Bobcats name was voted on by fans and subsequently won over the other suggested names that competed in the voting contest for the new team's name. The other choices were Charlotte Dragons and Charlotte Flight. Since the area is also the home of another professional ball team, the Carolina Panthers of the NFL, the Bobcats name seemed to coincide pretty well with the feline theme of the area.
The Charlotte Bobcats are playing out of the Charlotte Bobcats Arena that was constructed out of a leisure and hotel tax and reportedly cost the city around $260 to build. This controversial stadium was supposed to have been for the preceding team, the Hornets and the previous team ironically moved to another city due to lack of support for the construction of a new stadium for them.
