The Chicago White Sox is a Major League baseball team that plays out of the State of Illinois, representing the city of Chicago. The Chicago White Sox has been playing in the Major League since the year 1901 when the League was still called the American League. Here's a brief account of how the Chicago White Sox first started in the world of baseball and how the team got to the Major Leagues.
The team that is the Chicago White Sox first came into the North American baseball scene not as the Sox, but as a team called the Cornhuskers from Sioux City. This team was put together sometime in the late 1800s as a member of the minor league baseball division called the Western League. In the year 1900, the Western League changed its name to the American League, and somewhere in between, the team that was soon to be the Chicago White Sox was relocated twice due to a change in ownership. The team first moved to St. Paul after the Sioux team was bought by Charles Comiskey and was later moved to the South Side of Chicago when the National League gave the American League the go-ahead signal to have a team from Chicago play in the Major League.
It was then that the Chicago White Sox was born. The team that was owned by former ballplayer Comiskey had a change in name from The Sioux City Cornhuskers to the Chicago White Stockings. After winning its first American League pennant in the year 1901, the team's name was shortened considerably to the present Chicago White Sox. Actually, it was the sports editors of the Chicago Tribune who first gave the team this moniker in 1903, and it has been used as the team's official name ever since.
