The History of the Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professionally trained American football team located in Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City Chiefs are members of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).

The Kansas City Chiefs were originally referred to as the Dallas Texans. They were started by Lamar Hunt in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. The Kansas City Chiefs later moved to Kansas City and were named the Chiefs in 1963. The Kansas City mayor H. Roe Bartle assured the team that they would have increased ticket sales. The Kansas City Chiefs joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger.

The Kansas City Chiefs get their name from Kansas' Mayor Bartle. Bartle, 35 years prior, founded the Native American-based honor society known as The Tribe of Mic-O-Say within the Boy Scouts of America organization. This deed earned him the nickname, "The Chief."

The Chiefs' first Kansas City home was located at 22nd and Brooklyn. It was called the Municipal Stadium. The Municipal Stadium opened in 1923 having 49,002 seats. The Chiefs later moved into the new Arrowhead Stadium in 1972. The Chiefs' very first game was at the Arrowhead Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chiefs won 24-14.
