The Los Angeles Dodgers are a pro baseball team that is part of the National League's Western Division. The home of the Dodgers is the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers were not in the city of Los Angeles from the very beginning, and they were in fact playing for a city that is located in the far eastern part of the United States, in Brooklyn, New York. This move of the Los Angeles Dodgers from the East to the West happened way back in the year 1957, and the team was called the Brooklyn Dodgers before they landed in L.A.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were born because the Brooklyn Dodgers were to be moved to a new location, and there were several reasons why the team had to be relocated, one of which was the need to build a new stadium to house the popular Brooklyn Dodgers team. The team owner, Walter O'Malley, was having a hard time finding a suitable location in Brooklyn for the stadium he wanted, so he decided to look elsewhere; soon he was looking for locations in other states instead of Brooklyn lots.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were created when O'Malley moved his team from the east to the west after Los Angeles officials allowed him to buy the land which he could build his stadium on. This move happened in 1957 and it coincided with the move of the Manhattan Giants to the neighboring city of San Francisco, keeping the legendary rivalry between the two teams intact. The Los Angeles Dodgers now call the Dodgers Stadium their ballpark. The team has won five World Series titles since the move, and this is something the people of Brooklyn sorely regret because they actually lost their beloved Dodgers to the City of Angels due to a simple land dispute between NY politicians and O'Malley.
