Fly, Philadelphia Eagles Fly!

Philadelphia isn't just the home for damn good cheese steak sandwiches and the Liberty Bell. Philadelphia is also the home of the National Football League team the Philadelphia Eagles. They are a member of the Eastern Division of the NFC in the NFL and have been an expansion team of the NFL since 1933.

The Philadelphia Eagle colors are midnight green, black, white and silver. Their team mascot and logo are a swooping eagle. Their team began after the Frankford Yellow Jackets went bankrupt back in 1931. The Eagles were a replacement for this team, but had to merge with the Pittsburgh Steelers during WWII due to a lack of players. During this time, they were known as the "Phil-Pitt Steagles".

Since then, the Philadelphia Eagles have won 3 League Championships, 3 NFL Championships and a few NFL Eastern and NFC championships. They have made two Super Bowl appearances in 1980 and 2004. In 1980, the team lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV with a score of 27-10. In 2004, they lost Super Bowl XXXIX to the New England Patriots with a score of 24-21.

The Philadelphia Eagles have a fight song. The Fight song is entitled: "Fly, Eagles, Fly" and is sung by very enthusiastic Philadelphia fans. They train in the off season at the football field at Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.

The team also participates in various charities in their community. They have an Eagles "Fly for Leukemia" fund raiser as well as a youth partnership that helps low income kids in the metropolitan Philadelphia region. They do a book mobile for literacy and build playgrounds and host various events for their fans.

Stars include names like Steve Van Buren, Tom Brookshier, Reggie White, Jerome Brown and Earle "Greasy" Neale. Other notables include head coach Dick Vermeil and team executive Jim Gallagher. In 2006, the movie Invincible documented the true story of Vince Papale. Played by Mark Wahlberg, Vince Papale was a 30 year old bartender who actually made open tryouts held by coach Dick Vermeil. It was a very uplifting story for the working class in Philadelphia who obviously needed a hero to look up to.

The Philadelphia Eagles are an amazing football team. Even though they haven't won a Super Bowl yet, they continue to inspire old and young alike. Fly, Eagles Fly!
