The Washington Redskins play football in the FedExField in Landover Maryland. Playing in the wintry mix at our nation's capital in Washington DC, this team represents one of the finest football franchises in the history of the National Football League.
The Washington Redskins play in the Eastern Division of the NFC in the NFL. They started their long and successful career way back in 1932. Back then, they played in the city of Boston, but quickly moved to Washington DC due to a lack of fan support. Their team colors are the illustrious burgundy and gold. The logo is a very familiar Native American character with feather and tomahawk.
The Washington Redskins have made five total appearances at the Super Bowl. They won three of those Super Bowl championships, making them one of the most successful teams in their division.
Hall of fame coaches Joe Gibs, Ray Flaherty and George Allen are credited with leading the Washington Redskins to victory on many occasions. It should also be known that coach Vince Lombardi coached the team in 1969 (right before his death) after his stint with the Green Bay Packers. Players of note include hall-of-fame winners Cliff Batles, Joe Gibbs, John Riggins and Charley Taylor. MVP quarter back Doug Williams and Mark Rypien also belong on that list of exceptional players.
Interestingly, the Washington Redskins play football in the largest stadium in the NFL. The FedExField holds over 91,700 fans at full capacity. They have an official marching band (this is rare in the NFL) that plays their fight song: "Hail to the Redskins". Their fans are extremely loyal.
While their has been a bit of controversy over the name "redskin" being offensive to Native American, there are no immediate plans to change either the team name, logo, fight song or mascot. When polled, most Native Americans said they really didn't care.
